katlyn – unbearable

recently shot with Katlyn Lacoste, i had the idea to paint her with white body paint. we spent a while applying the paint from head-to-toe and experimented with a bunch of different lighting techniques. i think this might have been my favorite. its just a large sofbox almost perpendicular to the wall she was leaning against. model is also quite close to the softbox.  i continue to find that the simplest light tends to give the best results.

body paint, if you’re curious, is Ben Ney’s Magicake Aqua Paint.  its wonderful to work with and really natural and safe.

Brooke – Catch Me

every once in a while i go back into my archives of shoots.  sometimes to just revisit the moments of a good shoot, other times to look for something new in the old.  something that might seem fresh again with new eyes.  so, as i was working on collecting some photos for a new project, i came across this photo of Brooke that i’d wanted to work on when i first shot it back in February 2010.  once i booted it up into photoshop and started to work on it, it became clear that i had something strong and possibly moving.  Brooke somehow manages to bring together strength and serenity and make it look so completely effortless that it almost defies explanation.

Double Chocolate Exposures

having one really wonderful art model come to visit for a few days is great, but two is kinda double the fun! i had the chance to work and collaborate with stephanie anne and brooke labrie for a day yesterday and then a little bit today. and i’ve had this old, expired polaroid chocolate film sitting in the fridge. it has a nice, well, chocolate tone to it and i mentioned that we should break it out and see what we could do. once i loaded it up, connected a trigger for the studio strobes to the camera and set up a single soft box. the first shots were actually really nice. then i had this idea to do double-exposures. wasn’t sure what we’d get here, but the idea was that each model would choose a pose, then the other model could play off of it and we’d make another exposure. the results were, in a word, much better that i could have expected.

Nancy Greene Lake, Rossland, BC

morning at the lake around Nancy Greene Provincial Park were often chilly and we typically had some light mist floating on the waters.  one morning when we arrived at the lake, the entire lake was socked in with clouds.  the visuals that emerged were unlike anything i’d ever photographed before.

here are a few frames with Rhus on different days, both just before sunrise.

Rossland Salt Prints

here are two images i decided to print yesterday from my trip to Rossland, BC. i wanted to print them in the dark room and chose to do them as salt prints rather than palladium because in some ways, its quick and easy (despite a 20 minute exposure time). the chemistry is simple and the results look wonderful.

Travelogue – Vancouver, British Columbia

In August 2010 I had the opportunity to travel to Rossland, BC to meet up with some old friends and make some new ones. Our host, Michael Cordiez was instrumental in bringing everyone together including two truly inspirational photographers, Dave Aharonian and Ron Skei. The times we spent talking about our craft and philosophy of artistic photography will provide continued inspiration.

I hope not too much time passes before i get to see my new friends Doug Doyle, Jeany, and Michael’s wonderful wife, Row.

And our work would not be complete without the dedication and tireless work of the models who endure so much of our crazed inspirations. Getting up at 5:30 am to shoot in a freezing lake is not something that many people i know would endure. But the results are always beautiful and full of graceful serenity.

The friendships that emerge from these collaborations are something that I will cherish for a lifetime. And it is always difficult to say good bye, especially when the next meeting is usually uncertain. The times shared with these friends calms my soul and nourishes my inspirational drive. Excitedly looking forward to what comes next.

Misty Morning, Nancy Reese Provincial Park

I don’t know what it is about the vibe up here, but there really doesn’t seems to be nearly so many uptight people here when it comes to nudity. We all got up early, Michael (our host), Rhus, Sarah Ellis, and Michael’s photographer friend Doug and headed out to this lake early this morning. Rhus and I picked one corner of the beach, while Michael, Doug, and Sarah Ellis worked the other side.

I shot a roll of film and, of course the Mamiya didn’t want to advance the film. Probably has something to do with the metric system they use up here. But in the end, I think the shots will work out fine. We took a little bit of digital just as some dogs came trundling down to the beach.

Enjoy,

Rossland, BC – First Imressions

The time so far in Rossland has been incredibly energizing. The landscapes are completely inspiring and the people even more so. But having a few moments to shoot a few art nudes with Rhus was all I really needed to make me realize how much there there really is to take advantage of here in this beautiful place.

So here is a quick iPad edit of Rhus in a beautiful grove of ferns from earlier this afternoon.
