Brooke – Abstractions

working with Brooke, i wanted to create some abstract figure studies and we tried to work slowly and deliberately. To me the results are at once anchored in form as well as connected in emotion. These images were shot on film, scanned and split-toned in Photoshop. The prints of these photographs are lush and full of subtle detail.

Brooke – Burgundy Triptych

it was an interesting path that led me to the look of these final images. i’ve had some red filters in my photo bag that were originally intended for shooting infrared film and i’ve almost never used them. so, recently while i was shooting with Brooke, i decided to put one of them on and shoot with my digital cam. the result was this super-saturated red monotone. a little manipulation with Photoshop to tweak the contrast and then add a colorize layer that’s then just set to shift the tones of the highlights (i’m diggin on some split toning right now) and i came up with this über-pleasing burgundy and muted yellow duotone.

dig it (if you please).

Crestfallen

no matter how hard you try to supplant what’s really going on during a shoot, sometimes the emotions just creep to the surface.

Experimentus Brutalis

the last shoot of the year started with some experimentation for the workshop we’re holding in mid-january.  the tiny space is a storage area inside the studio with half-walls.  we have a large softbox that fits just on the top of the walls providing a large, diffuse light source.  i think our students for this upcoming class will have a blast and get some great shots.  for now the workshop is sold out, but if you want to be put on the wait list, send me an email (scott at silverystars.com).

Salt Prints on Bamboo Paper

my pal <a href=”http://vernontrent.deviantart.com/”>Vernon Trent</a> recommended using Hahnemühle’s Bamboo inkjet paper for making salt prints.  he said that he had a fair amount of success with it, so i decided to give it a try and got some interesting results.
on this particular print, i used some really fine sand paper to remove the inkjet coating.  i had a rather difficult time getting a good, even coating, but some of the results turned out to be kinda interesting in their anomalies.  tonally, however, they’re pretty nice.

i decided to do a little bit of printing in the darkroom on christmas eve this year.  my pal Vernon Trent recommended using Hahnemühle’s Bamboo inkjet paper for making salt prints.  he said that he had a fair amount of success with it, so i decided to give it a try and got some interesting results.

Katlyn – Satled Paper Prints

tried to fire up the darkroom again to make some salted paper prints of recent work with Katlyn Lacoste and had limited success.  the problem with most of these alternative processes is simply that the chemistry and resulting quality of prints are subject to variations in temperature and humidity in the space where the prints are made.  its getting to be winter in the north eastern US and the conditions in my basement are different now than they were when i was printing in the summer.  originally, prints were made when the basement was 68 degrees and 50% humidity.  now its about 60 degrees down there and only 35% humidity.  this had a real effect on the look of the prints.  the gold chloride toner used to finish the prints was largely ineffective at 60 degrees.  warming the toner up a bit helped, but the prints just had different tones than my originals.  instead of coming back to a  more neutral tone, the prints remained much warmer.  although they’re not entirely bad, i preferred the original look.

so now i’ll have to attempt to manage the atmosphere down there with a space heater and humidifier.  this could prove to be a challenge, especially since the space heater will probably counteract the efforts of the humidifier.  certainly a creative challenge.  however, here are two of the best prints from that session.

prints were made from digital photos from digitally printed negatives and printed on Arches Platine paper.  print size is about 6 x 7.5 inches.

I am making several of the artist’s proofs of these prints are available for purchase. These are preliminary test prints that contain some printing imperfections. They are available at about half the cost of a perfect print. Prints are signed on the back and marked with “artist’s proof”. Image size is 6×7.5 inches, printed on 9×11 inch sheet of Arches Platine paper. Edges are torn with a straight edge and the original deckle edge is on the bottom of each print. There are only 3 proofs of #5899 and 4 proofs of #5914 and sold on a first come, first served basis.

katlyn – beltzville blue

Katlyn and I ventured out to Beltzville, a place which has traditionally marked the start for past summers’ outdoor nudes. Katlyn wanted to find some nice rocks and typically it is very secluded here. This didn’t turn out to be the case for a good portion of the day’s shoot, but we managed to pull off a fair amount of nice shots.

These photos are scans of a frame of Polaroid Blue film. The image on the left is the latent image from the peel-apart backing which we attempted to save and transport back along with the print which appears on the right.
